Akim Swedru MP calls for mandatory public disclosure of assets by Public Officials

Kennedy Osei Nyarko is the Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru. He has stated that asset declarations by public officials are mandatory. This is not an optional requirement but a legal obligation.

In a recent Facebook post, Nyarko expressed concern about transparency in asset declarations. He urged that the names of those who declare their assets should be public. He also called for the names of those who do not declare to be made known.

Nyarko suggested strengthening the system by publishing asset details before and after officials take office. He proposed annual declarations published by the Auditor General.

“The law is clear on asset declarations,” Nyarko said. “It is illegal for any public official to refuse this.” He emphasized that compliance should not require a presidential directive.

He believes that failing to implement a strong asset declaration system harms trust in public institutions. Making these declarations accessible could help combat corruption, he argued. It would also ensure high standards of integrity among public officials.

Nyarko’s comments come as Ghana faces ongoing corruption issues, especially in the public sector. His call for transparency aligns with demands from anti-corruption advocates and civil society groups.

The MP concluded by stating that asset declaration should not be seen as a burden. Instead, it is a vital tool for promoting trust and upholding the rule of law.
