Tweneboah Fokuo, MP for Manso Nkwanta, has defended the economic legacy of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, rejecting claims by President John Dramani Mahama that the previous administration mismanaged the economy.
Mahama, speaking at a National Tripartite Committee meeting, described the state of the economy he inherited as a “crime scene” and accused the Akufo-Addo government of reckless economic handling.
However, Fokuo, in an interview on Channel One TV, argued that despite global challenges like COVID-19, the Akufo-Addo administration maintained economic resilience.
He cited a 4% GDP growth, a $3.1 billion positive balance of payments, and a 56.2% stock market growth as indicators of economic strength. He also highlighted wage increments of 30% in 2023 and 25% in 2024 for public sector workers.
Commending Akufo-Addo’s leadership, Fokuo insisted that the economy was handed over in a strong position and questioned the basis of Mahama’s claims.
