Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante, has attributed 60 percent of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election to the leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Dr. Asante, speaking to Citi News, pointed out that neglecting party structures and arrogance displayed by government appointees significantly weakened the party’s chances.
He stated, “I think Mr. Akufo-Addo contributed about 60 percent of Dr. Bawumia’s defeat, and Dr. Bawumia himself contributed about 40 percent.
The structures were weak, more like a one-man show, and the arrogance from appointees alienated the party from its base.”
Dr. Asante added that the NDC’s future electoral success will largely depend on the performance of the current Mahama-led administration.
