Amadu Sorogho condemns heavy-handed security raid on Wontumi

Former MP for Madina, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, has criticized security tactics. This was during the attempted arrest of NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 26, Sorogho suggested a different approach. He believes the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) should have used legal channels. Instead of sending heavily armed officers to Wontumi’s home, they could have obtained a court order.

"Wontumi was invited but refused to come," he said. "I oppose using so many armed men for one person." He emphasized that there are better ways to handle such situations.

While he acknowledged that security agencies may have had a warrant, he questioned their methods. He raised concerns about the necessity and proportionality of the force used. "I’m glad they had a warrant," he added, "but I’m critical of how it was executed."

Chairman Wontumi is set to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today, May 26, 2025. This follows an unsuccessful attempt by security forces to arrest him at his home on May 23.

The incident caused outrage among NPP supporters who protested outside Wontumi’s residence. They viewed the actions as intimidation and criticized the use of excessive force by the state.

The exact reason for the attempted arrest remains unclear. However, reports indicate that Wontumi assured officers he would report to CID voluntarily on May 26.
