Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, MP for Amenfi Central, organized a meeting. She partnered with District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. Peter Amponsah. The goal was to promote responsible mining practices.
The event took place at Jabistep Hotel in Agona Amenfi. It included various stakeholders from the mining sector. Attendees included small-scale miners, gold buyers, and excavator operators. Political figures like Mr. Joseph Yamin and Mr. Mustapha Gbande were also present.
DCE Hon. Peter Amponsah opened the meeting by emphasizing unity among stakeholders. He highlighted the need for education on sustainable mining practices.
Mr. Mustapha Gbande praised Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe's leadership efforts. He noted that the NDC is committed to protecting natural resources under Mahama's administration. He urged miners to operate legally and focus on land reclamation after mining.
Gbande criticized the previous administration for issuing over 2,000 mining leases irresponsibly, leading to environmental damage.
Mr. Joseph Yamin supported these views and condemned mercury use in small-scale mining. He called for a local task force to regulate mining activities properly.
Yamin stressed the importance of proper licensing and environmental care in mining operations.
Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe expressed concerns about security operatives disrupting legal mining in Amenfi Central. She called for better coordination with local authorities.
The MP also requested urgent infrastructure development in her district, including a hospital and improved roads.
She emphasized that access to clean water and better education are essential for her constituents' well-being.
This consultative forum aimed to align local mining practices with sustainable development principles and strengthen cooperation among all parties involved.
