Annoh-Dompreh makes strong case for election of MMDCEs on floor of Parliament

Frank Annoh-Dompreh is the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri. He has renewed calls for a constitutional amendment. This amendment would allow for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He believes this change is vital for Ghana's democracy and local governance.

Speaking in Parliament, Annoh-Dompreh clarified his position. He does not criticize current MMDCEs or aim to create rivalry with MPs. Instead, he sees this reform as necessary for accountability and reducing political tension. It should also reflect the people's will.

Ghana's system of appointing MMDCEs has not changed since the 1980s. Annoh-Dompreh argues that political realities now require a new approach. He highlighted ongoing tensions between MPs and MMDCEs as evidence that change is needed. Some disputes have even turned violent.

He stated that electing MMDCEs directly would enhance legitimacy and participation. It would also reduce political interference and clarify roles between MPs and MMDCEs. Ultimately, it would reflect the true will of the people.

Annoh-Dompreh dismissed concerns about direct elections causing divisions or minority control in districts. He emphasized that democracy should reflect the people's choice, even if it differs from those in power. "MPs are elected; assembly members are elected," he noted. "Why should MMDCEs be an exception?"

He urged the Local Government Committee and the Minister for Local Government to lead this reform effort. Annoh-Dompreh stressed that action must be taken now. Parliament should not let this issue fade into mere talk.

"It is time to address this matter seriously," he said. "Ghana deserves a more accountable local governance system."
