Appointing new IGP while injuction is pending is contempt of court - Kofi Bentil

The Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has criticized President John Mahama’s decision to appoint a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) while a Supreme Court ruling on the removal of former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is pending.

Speaking on JoyFM, Bentil described the move as contemptuous of the judiciary, arguing that taking actions that undermine a court’s imminent ruling violates legal principles.

He emphasized that the matter is not about individuals but the integrity of the security system, warning that if the court rules against the removal, Ghana could face a constitutional crisis.

IMANI Ghana and security expert Prof. Kwesi Aning have filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the President from removing heads of security agencies until the court’s decision in May 2025.
