Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is facing backlash from youth groups. This follows the sudden dismissal of Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Prof. Addai-Mensah led important reforms at Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital. He was removed from his position after a closed-door meeting with the Health Minister. The Ministry has not explained the reasons for this decision.
The Asante Youth Association (AYA) strongly opposes this move. Members protested over the weekend, calling it a politically motivated dismissal. They gathered at the residence of Otumfuo Hiahene, who chairs the hospital’s governing board.
Baba Alhaji, a vocal member, stated, “This is not the time to engage in politics.” He demanded that authorities reverse their decision. If not, he warned they would resist it at all costs.
AYA leadership intervened to calm tensions during the protest. Some members threatened to block the Board Chair from attending a meeting. Vice President Nana Oppong Boadi urged for peace and stability in the region.
Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo is reportedly set to take over as CEO. He is expected to be introduced to hospital management later today.
