Asset declaration law must be reviewed – Anti-Corruption Coalition

Samuel Harrison-Cudjoe is the Programme Officer at the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition. He has called for a review of Ghana’s asset declaration and liability law. This review aims to strengthen efforts against corruption.

Harrison-Cudjoe spoke at a workshop in Sunyani on May 12. The workshop focused on strategies to fight corruption. It was organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition for civil society groups and stakeholders.

He emphasized the need for stricter measures in the existing law. He noted that the current framework lacks key components like verification and monitoring mechanisms. These deficiencies weaken its effectiveness.

“We are asking for a total review of Ghana's asset declaration law,” he stated. He believes the law has flaws that hinder the fight against corruption.

The law does not include a verification process to check declared assets. It also lacks a monitoring system and does not allow public access to these declarations. “If this is not addressed, it makes it easy for misuse of public funds,” he added.

Harrison-Cudjoe stressed that there should be strict penalties for officials who fail to declare their assets or provide false information. He believes these reforms are crucial for meaningful progress against corruption in Ghana.
