Assets declaration: Mahama should’ve referred defaulters to CHRAJ – Azeem

Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has spoken out about President John Dramani Mahama's actions. He believes the sanctions on appointees who did not declare their assets are punitive. However, he argues that the proper legal route should involve the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Azeem questioned the legal basis for these sanctions. He acknowledged their deterrent effect but doubted their overall effectiveness. “It is punitive enough,” he stated.

Azeem suggested that President Mahama should have referred the matter to CHRAJ. Article 287 of Ghana’s Constitution outlines how breaches of conduct must be handled by this commission. CHRAJ can investigate complaints and recommend appropriate sanctions.

President Mahama has set a deadline for all appointees to declare their assets by May 7, 2025. Those who fail to comply will face automatic dismissal.
