Private lawyer and NPP member Alex Gyamfi has criticized Ghana’s Attorney General, Dominic Ayine. He accuses Ayine of neglecting human rights principles he once supported.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s 'The Forum', Gyamfi expressed disappointment in Ayine's silence. He highlighted recent pre-trial detentions and questionable legal practices under Ayine's leadership.
“I oppose pre-trial detentions. It’s disappointing these are happening under Ayine,” Gyamfi said. He noted that Ayine had previously advocated for human rights within his party.
Gyamfi raised concerns about heavy-handed legal actions and bail conditions. He questioned the commitment to constitutional rules, particularly the 48-hour rule.
“What happened to the 48-hour rule? Why can EOCO demand 50 million cedis for bail?” he asked.
He urged his party members to stay vigilant against potential abuses of power.
“The issues we face today have happened before,” he warned. “If you’re NPP and the NDC arrests you, be aware.”
While acknowledging a history of human rights violations, Gyamfi emphasized that Ayine's inaction undermines his values.
“Current events do not inspire confidence in our democracy,” he stated. “No sane person can agree with what is happening.”
