Bagbin questions MPs’ silence on ‘daughter of a murderer’ outburst

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is frustrated with MPs. He is upset about their failure to identify the MP who made the offensive comment. The remark, “daughter of a murderer,” was directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

During a session on May 27, Bagbin called this lack of accountability disappointing. He emphasized that the comment was made openly in the House.

“The investigations are still ongoing, but I am very disappointed,” he said. He noted that no one could identify who made the remark. Even those seated nearby could not say who it was.

Bagbin criticized the Majority side of the House specifically. He questioned how none of its members could identify the speaker. “You had a clear view and heard it twice,” he pointed out.

He also expressed concern about surveillance systems failing to help in identifying the MP responsible. The footage did not capture the offending member.

“These are serious matters,” Bagbin stressed. “When they come to me properly, I take action.” He added that noise alone would not compel him to act.

The incident occurred on February 4 during a debate marking Dr. J.B. Danquah's death anniversary. A male MP shouted, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” This statement was widely believed to target Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The comment caused public outrage and calls for disciplinary action. Despite media attention and discussions within Parliament, the identity of the MP remains unknown.
