Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is disappointed with MPs. They have not identified the colleague who made an offensive comment. The remark was directed at Korle Klottey MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
Bagbin spoke to the House on Tuesday, May 27. He said investigations into the February 4 incident are ongoing. He expressed frustration that no MP has come forward. The comment was made openly in the chamber.
“The investigations are still not concluded,” he stated. “But I am very disappointed with all of you.” He noted that a member uttered those words in front of colleagues. Yet, no one can identify who it was.
Bagbin criticized the Majority side specifically. He questioned how they could not identify the speaker. They had a clear view of the Minority caucus during the incident.
“The majority members were watching the minority,” he said. “You’re telling me none of you can identify the person?” The Speaker pointed out that the individual shouted twice during the debate.
He also highlighted a failure in surveillance and CCTV systems to capture this incident. “These are serious matters,” Bagbin stressed. “When properly brought to me, I take action.”
The incident occurred during a heated debate about Dr. J.B. Danquah's death anniversary. While Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke, a male MP shouted: “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
This comment was widely understood to target Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings. It sparked public outrage and calls for disciplinary action.
Despite media scrutiny and condemnation, the identity of the offending MP remains unknown.
