Bail Terms For Wontumi Unjust, Breach Due Process – Lawyer

A lawyer for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has criticized the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He calls the bail conditions unfair and excessive.

Enoch Afoakwa spoke during an interview on Channel One TV on May 29. He described the bail terms as “arbitrary, harsh, and excessive.” He raised concerns about due process and possible political motivations.

“It is arbitrary. It is harsh. And it is excessive,” Afoakwa stated. He urged law enforcement to respect due process. The justice system should be fair and impartial.

Chairman Wontumi is under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial crimes. These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. He is also linked to an alleged international organized crime network.

EOCO granted Wontumi bail on May 28, setting it at GHS50 million with sureties. However, these conditions are difficult to meet, so he remains in custody.

Afoakwa believes the bail terms violate the principle of presumption of innocence. He thinks they aim to delay his client’s release. “We understand accountability's importance, but justice must be fair,” he said.

The legal team plans to file applications to review the bail conditions or seek other remedies for Wontumi’s release.
