Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He says the Minority in Parliament and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia agree on the recent cedi appreciation.
Dr. Bawumia believes his gold-for-oil program stabilizes the cedi. The Minority, however, points to other factors. They mention the US-China trade war and fiscal discipline under the IMF program. They also highlight reduced government spending as reasons for the cedi's rise.
On May 22, during a Metro TV interview, Ahiagbah stated there is no disagreement between them. He explained that both sides are discussing trade matters affecting the dollar's value.
Ahiagbah’s comments follow recent discussions about cedi appreciation and economic policies from the Mahama administration. He criticized current government policies, saying they lack impact on the economy.
"They haven’t done anything," Ahiagbah said. "They’re just speaking English to us." He stressed that job creation should be a priority over focusing on cedi strength.
"Our problem is jobs," he noted. "You want to produce 24 hours but your currency strength policy is fading."
