Bawumia condemns Wontumi’s arrest, calls for due process

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is concerned about the arrest of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman.

In a Facebook post on May 28, Bawumia criticized how the case is being handled. He described the charges against Wontumi as vague and noted that his whereabouts are unknown.

Bawumia stated, “I am deeply concerned about the arrest and continued detention of Mr. Wontumi.” He emphasized that all Ghanaians deserve justice, regardless of their political affiliation.

He said, “In our democracy, no individual is above the law.” He added that constitutional rights must be upheld for everyone.

Dr. Bawumia has contacted Wontumi’s legal team to ensure his rights are protected. He praised the lawyers for their professionalism in this matter.

He urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to follow legal procedures. “I urge EOCO to respect Mr. Wontumi's rights as guaranteed by our Constitution,” he stated.

Bawumia warned that failing to do so could undermine public trust in the justice system. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law in Ghana.

“Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law—not by arbitrary power,” he concluded.

Chairman Wontumi’s arrest has sparked public debate and calls for transparency from various groups within the NPP and civil society.
