Bawumia expresses concern over continuous detention of Wontumi

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has spoken out about the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Wontumi. He urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to respect Wontumi's constitutional rights.

Wontumi was arrested yesterday after responding to an invitation from the Police CID. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Dr. Bawumia stated that "no one is above the law" in a democracy. However, he emphasized that individual rights should not be violated. He expressed concern over Wontumi's ongoing detention without clear charges.

The former Vice President called on EOCO and other state institutions to follow the law strictly. He insisted they must respect Wontumi's rights as guaranteed by the Constitution.

In his full statement, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern about Wontumi’s arrest and continued detention. He noted that charges against him remain vague and his location is unclear.

He reiterated that no Ghanaian should be denied their constitutional rights, regardless of political affiliation or status. Justice and due process are essential for democracy.

Dr. Bawumia has been in contact with Wontumi’s legal team since this morning to ensure his rights are protected. He praised their professionalism and vigilance during this time.

He urged EOCO and relevant institutions to act within legal bounds to maintain public trust in the justice system. Any deviation could undermine democratic values in Ghana.

Ghana must always be governed by law, not arbitrary power, he stated. Our Republic is strongest when institutions are both firm and fair.
