Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is working to secure bail for Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and is known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since May 27. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is investigating him for fraud, financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
On May 28, he was granted bail set at GHS 50 million. However, he has not met the bail conditions and remains detained. His prolonged custody has led to political controversy.
Minority MPs have boycotted parliament and protested publicly. They criticize the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated.
In an interview with Citi News, Divine Agorhom confirmed senior party members are involved in securing Wontumi’s release. He stated that efforts include Dr. Bawumia and other senior figures.
Agorhom expressed hope that EOCO would relax the bail conditions. He mentioned exploring legal options if EOCO does not revise them.
He said, “If that is not the case, we will consider legal avenues.” The NPP leadership is mobilizing resources to find a solution for Wontumi's release.
The situation continues to spark debate across the political spectrum as they seek both legal and diplomatic channels for assistance.
