Becoming a DCE drained me, could not sustain my family on GH¢5,000 Salary – Duanab

Mr. Thomas Duanab Wuni Pearson was the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi. He recently spoke about the low pay for DCEs in Ghana, especially in rural areas.

He revealed that he earned a monthly salary of GH¢5,000. This amount was not enough to support his family. As a politician, he also had to spend money on various occasions.

Pearson, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate, expressed his frustration. He said being a DCE made his financial situation worse. The demands from constituents added to his challenges.

Before his political role, he worked for the Ghana Health Service (GHS). He compared his previous benefits with his current situation on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM. “I became worse off by becoming a DCE,” he stated.

He emphasized that GH¢5,000 was insufficient for basic needs. It could not even feed his immediate family or help extended relatives and friends. “GH¢5,000 cannot feed my family,” he lamented.

Pearson noted that the economy had worsened during his tenure as DCE. Many resources were unavailable to him while serving in this role. He concluded that rural districts suffered greatly due to poor remuneration for their leaders.
