Justice Abdulai, a private legal practitioner, has distanced himself from the Ghana Bar Association's (GBA) recent resolution. The GBA condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Abdulai described the resolution as meritless and irrelevant to Ghana’s constitutional processes.
On Channel One TV's The Big Issue, he stated, “I was not part of the 47 that voted for the resolution.” He expressed strong disagreement with the resolution and its contents.
Abdulai acknowledged that he might be bound by the GBA's collective decision. However, he rejected any personal endorsement or support for it. He said, “I will never advance any argument in its favour because it is completely wrong.”
He questioned the relevance of the GBA’s position on this matter. “It has no bearing on the decision made by the Council of State or the executive,” he noted.
Abdulai also called for reform within the GBA. He believes they can evolve and become more relevant to Ghana's political landscape.
The GBA had called for an immediate revocation of Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension on April 29. They labeled her suspension as unconstitutional and lacking legal foundation under the 1992 Constitution. Despite this, Justice Abdulai questioned both the substance and significance of their intervention.
