George Krobea Asante is the Deputy Communications Director of the NPP. He stated that the party will resist President John Dramani Mahama's attempts to politicise the judiciary.
His comments followed Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on April 22. This decision came after a prima facie case was established from three petitions for her removal. The suspension was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, with input from the Council of State. A five-member committee has been formed to investigate this matter.
In response, a coalition of political parties, including the NPP, plans a nationwide demonstration. This protest is scheduled for Monday, May 5.
During an interview on April 24 with Channel One Newsroom, Mr. Krobea Asante expressed strong opposition to the suspension. He emphasized that they will not rest until it is withdrawn. "We must protect our judicial system's integrity," he said.
He warned against allowing President Mahama to politicise such an important institution. "This would be alarming for all of us," he added. He also mentioned plans for one of the biggest demonstrations yet and stated they would move from region to region in their efforts.
