CJ Suspension: Go to court, not the media – Joyce Bawa fires back at GBA

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a special aide to President John Mahama, criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). She disagreed with their statement condemning the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Bawa described the GBA's position as overreaching and politically motivated.

The GBA expressed concerns about the constitutional basis for the Chief Justice’s suspension. They also warned about potential implications of this action. In response, Bawa questioned the GBA’s authority to interpret constitutional matters. She accused them of using media threats instead of legal channels.

“Who has invited the Bar to interpret the Constitution?” she asked on social media. “And who says that threats from the Bar can manipulate a constitutional process?”

Bawa challenged the GBA to take legal action if they believe their arguments are valid. “If indeed the Bar is convinced that its case is on Terra Firma,” she said, “then they should go to court instead of making empty public rants.”

Her comments highlight rising tensions after the President suspended the Chief Justice. The government claims this move follows constitutional provisions. However, critics worry about executive interference in judicial matters.

The GBA had urged restraint and called for an immediate reversal of the suspension. They argued that it undermines judicial independence and constitutional order.

Bawa’s rebuttal adds a political dimension to this controversy. Calls are increasing for clarity on the legal grounds for removing the Chief Justice and its implications for Ghana’s democracy.
