CJ Suspension: We’re following the constitution, NPP overreacting – Fifi Kwetey

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC, has responded to the NPP. He dismissed their concerns about removing the Chief Justice. He called their reaction unwarranted panic.

In an interview on Channel One TV on May 6, he emphasized that the process is constitutional. He warned the NPP against spreading unnecessary fear and suspicion. “Our friends in NPP are panicking too much,” he said.

Kwetey stated that every step follows the law. If it were unconstitutional, someone would have challenged it in court. “The procedures are fully according to the Constitution,” he added.

He noted that no credible argument has been made by the NPP against this process. “I don’t think any of them can say anything is against the Constitution,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo, hinted at a review of the Supreme Court’s ruling. This could happen if he finds their legal reasoning unconvincing.

On May 6, the Supreme Court dismissed Assafuah’s application regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's removal. The decision was made by a narrow 3-2 majority.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko ruled against Assafuah's request. Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented from this decision.

The court will release full reasons for its ruling on May 21, 2025.
