The Minority in Parliament has condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. They call this action a serious threat to judicial independence.
Deputy Minority Chief Whip Jerry Amed Shaib spoke to the media. He criticized the suspension as executive overreach. He believes it undermines the autonomy of the Judiciary.
Shaib emphasized that Ghana’s judicial integrity is vital for democracy. He called for Chief Justice Torkornoo's immediate reinstatement. This should happen while constitutional challenges are resolved in the Supreme Court.
The Minority also wants all removal proceedings against her suspended. They believe this should wait until the Supreme Court rules on legality and constitutionality.
They questioned the legitimacy of the petitions that led to her suspension. The Minority labeled these petitions "flimsy and frivolous." They warned about dangerous precedents set by such actions.
"We are saying enough is enough," Mr. Shaib stated. "Leave the judiciary alone. Leave Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo alone."
The Minority caucus pledged to defend Ghana’s democracy vigorously. They oppose what they see as creeping executive overreach and any politicization of the Judiciary.
