CJ suspension: Minority backs nationwide protest to defend Ghana’s democracy

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has made a bold statement. They support political parties resisting what they call "a direct assault" on Ghana's democracy.

This unrest centers around the recent suspension of the Chief Justice. Many view this action as unlawful. There are also concerns about the politically motivated dismissal of public servants.

The Minority warned that "the country is indeed tense." They believe executive actions are leading Ghana down a dangerous path.

A nationwide demonstration is planned for Monday, May 5, 2025. This protest is organized by opposition and independent groups. Participants include the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP).

The Minority stated that this protest is "not just a political action." It is a constitutional imperative to alert Ghanaians and the international community. They aim to highlight threats against judicial independence and democratic order.

They described these actions as an abuse of power and trust from the people of Ghana. Reports indicate widespread dismissals of civil servants based on political affiliation. The Minority called these terminations "a blow to national stability."

They expressed concern over how this impacts young professionals in Ghana. Additionally, there are troubling allegations about plots against the Electoral Commission Chairperson and her deputies. The Minority warned that such actions could "plunge Ghana into a crisis of legitimacy."

In closing, the Minority Caucus reaffirmed solidarity with all Ghanaians who value democracy. They emphasized that this issue transcends partisanship; it is about principle.

They urged citizens to unite and act as defenders of the Republic, not mere spectators. Their final message was clear: “We cannot afford to ignore these dangerous patterns.” The time to act is now.
