CPP demands reassignment of Kumasi mayor over ‘inhumane’ remarks

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called for action against Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi. They want President John Dramani Mahama to reassign him immediately. This follows the Mayor's controversial threat of corporal punishment for traders breaking city rules.

The CPP labeled the Mayor’s comments as “inhumane” and “irresponsible.” They argue that such threats make him unfit for office. Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, the CPP’s Flagbearer for the 2024 Presidential Election, condemned his remarks in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

She stated that corporal punishment is unacceptable and ineffective. “The welfare of humanity should be at the center of every policy,” she said. She urged the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to focus on dialogue and stakeholder engagement.

As a better solution, Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah suggested creating jobs for women and youth. This would help address congestion caused by petty trading. She criticized current conditions, saying it is shameful for people to sell under harsh circumstances.

The CPP's call comes after a recent press conference by the Mayor. He gave traders a two-week ultimatum to leave pavements and roadsides in the central business district. He warned of severe sanctions, including physical assault, if they do not comply.

This statement has drawn sharp criticism from various groups. The CPP emphasized that KMA should use a data-driven approach to tackle street trading issues. Proper planning is essential for cleaning up Kumasi effectively.

“Cleaning Kumasi should be backed by data,” Nana Sarpong-Kumankumah added. She stressed that understanding who is on the streets is crucial for addressing these problems properly.
