The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take the lead in ensuring that Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are elected rather than appointed.
CPP National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, reiterated the party’s long-standing advocacy for grassroots participation in selecting MMDCEs.
He emphasized that allowing citizens to elect their local leaders would enhance inclusivity and eliminate partisan bias.
He further noted that such a move would fulfill the vision of the late President J.E.A. Mills, who sought to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The CPP proposed that instead of presidential appointments, shortlisted candidates should be elected directly by the people in their respective districts.
The party believes this reform would curb corruption associated with the confirmation process of MMDCEs and reinforce the ideals of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in building strong and independent institutions.
