CRC: Over 600 submissions received, no input yet from NDC, NPP

The Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) has received over 600 submissions. These are for proposed reforms to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. However, the two main political parties have not participated yet. This information comes from Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, Secretary of the CRC.

On Joy FM’s NewsFile on May 3, Dr. Akumperigya shared that there are 325 online submissions and over 200 hard copy proposals. He expressed surprise that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have not submitted anything or appeared before the committee.

Submissions remain open as the committee continues its work. Dr. Akumperigya mentioned they have addressed thematic clusters but will keep working until recommendations are ready.

He outlined two ways to submit proposals: online via email at [email protected] or in person at the CRC office. The office is located at the Office of the President Annex in Ridge, near the Ministry of Communication.

Dr. Akumperigya discussed why a new constitutional review is needed despite past efforts in 2011 and more recently. He noted significant political changes since then, such as two presidential election petitions and a hung parliament.

He highlighted that public participation is crucial for this process. He referenced the Constitution’s preamble: “It is by the people, for the people.”

Dr. Akumperigya stressed that this document belongs to citizens. Therefore, it is important for all stakeholders to engage fully in this process.
