Cabinet to consider decentralisation of sanitation budget – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Cabinet will soon discuss decentralizing the national sanitation budget. This change aims to empower districts to manage their own sanitation needs.

Once approved, each district will be responsible for its sanitation issues. Local accountability will be central to improving sanitation across the country.

During a durbar at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa, Mahama emphasized cleanliness as a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He stated, “Cabinet will soon meet on decentralizing the sanitation budget.”

Mahama also revealed plans to revive the National Sanitation Day program. This program will become a legally backed and properly funded monthly event.

It will involve collaboration between local assemblies and private sector stakeholders. “Cleanliness will determine whether MMDCEs remain in office or are removed,” he said.

The National Sanitation Day program will engage all Ghanaians every month. It won’t just be symbolic; it will have legal backing and funding.

Expect more good news in the mid-year budget, Mahama added.
