Cedi rise: NPP only takes credit when things go well – Attah Issah

Attah Issah, the MP for Sagnarigu, criticized former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He disagreed with Bawumia's claim that the NDC had no role in the cedi's recent appreciation.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Issah stated that the cedi’s performance is not due to one administration or policy. Many factors influence its value. These include central bank interventions, government fiscal discipline, and global economic trends.

Issah noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) often claims credit only when outcomes are positive. He said, “The issue of politicising this discussion isn’t worth it.” He pointed out that economic policies led to an exchange rate of GHC16.

He added that the NPP avoids responsibility when situations are negative. Issah expressed no surprise at Bawumia's comments about giving credit to the NPP.

However, he acknowledged the previous NDC administration's contributions. He highlighted their debt restructuring program as a factor supporting the cedi’s appreciation.

Issah stated, “You cannot discount the impact of this program.” It helped fulfill IMF conditions and saved Ghana nearly $4 billion after creditor negotiations. Without this savings, there would have been more pressure on the cedi.
