Cedi strengthens, but Ghanaians still struggle – Minority calls for action

The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to act decisively. They want the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi to provide real economic relief for citizens.

“Everyone is happy that the cedi is stronger,” said Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei. “But what does this mean for the cost of living?”

She spoke during a Leaders’ Media Briefing. She noted that the cedi has recently gained against the US dollar. This recovery is due to improved inflows and actions by the Bank of Ghana.

Economists and business leaders welcome this change. However, the Minority believes Ghanaians have not yet felt these benefits in their daily lives.

“It’s important to take action,” Appiagyei added. She emphasized that changes in the cedi's value should lower living costs.

Despite positive signs in foreign exchange markets, prices remain high. Transport fares, food items, and utilities continue to strain household budgets.

The Minority warns that without swift government policy changes, these macroeconomic gains may not help many Ghanaians.

They are calling for practical steps to connect economic indicators with daily survival. This move is crucial for citizens to benefit from the cedi’s rebound.
