The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is reportedly unwell. He is committed to cooperating with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) during ongoing investigations.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, spoke to Asaase Radio about Wontumi's health. He said it prevented Wontumi from attending a scheduled meeting with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
“Because of his health, we couldn’t honor the CID invitation,” Appiah-Kubi explained. He plans to inform CID about Wontumi’s condition and request a new date for questioning.
Despite this setback, Appiah-Kubi stated they are cooperating with investigators. “They are still investigating. When he is in court, we will be ready,” he added. “We will return tomorrow to continue investigations.”
Wontumi was released from EOCO custody on June 2, 2025. He had been held in connection with an ongoing probe, but details remain unclear.
Meanwhile, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua issued a strong statement. He challenged the government to stop what he calls “intimidation” and take responsible officials to court.
After Wontumi’s release, Kodua said, “If they have a case, they should take our people to court.” He emphasized that if Wontumi has done something wrong, he should face legal action.
Kodua believes current actions against party members are politically motivated. “This intimidation shows they have nothing to prosecute according to the law,” he stated.
