Christ the King Catholic youth lead blood donation campaign

The Young Christian Workers Movement (YCWM) of Christ the King Catholic Church is dedicated to saving lives. They organized their annual blood donation exercise with health institutions. This event attracted many voluntary donors to meet the country's urgent blood needs.

The initiative supports YCWM's mission to promote national health efforts. It also encourages a culture of voluntary blood donation among youth and the community. The movement has led this life-saving campaign for over 15 years.

On Sunday, May 25, the blood donation exercise took place at Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra. Parishioners and health professionals gathered at the church forecourt. Medical staff from the 37 Military Hospital assisted donors during the event. Both first-time and regular donors participated enthusiastically.

Flight Lieutenant Rashid Bashiru spoke at the event. He is a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Blood Bank Department at 37 Military Hospital. He urged Ghanaians to view voluntary blood donation as a civic duty. “A single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives,” he said. He emphasized that donating twice a year could save six lives annually.

Bashiru encouraged people not to wait for special campaigns. Instead, he suggested visiting nearby hospitals to donate regularly. Ms. Lucy Dzata, President of YCWM, highlighted their support for blood donation efforts. She stated, “For more than fifteen years, we have organized these drives.” This helps maintain adequate blood supplies in hospitals.

Some donors shared personal reasons for participating in the event. They expressed their desire to save lives and inspire others to do so as well. The YCWM plays an important role in promoting health and community service in Ghana. Their partnership with 37 Military Hospital highlights collaborative efforts in strengthening healthcare.
