Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, the MP for Guan, has made a proposal. He wants the government to change the stalled National Cathedral project into affordable housing. This housing would be for public sector workers.
In an interview with Citi TV, Agbenyo criticized the cathedral initiative. He called it a failed investment that should be used more practically. His comments follow former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s admission about the project's issues.
Bawumia noted that taxpayers spent $58 million on the project. This spending led to public discontent and contributed to the NPP's loss in the 2024 election. Agbenyo expressed concern over this wasted investment.
He stated, “$58 million has gone down the drain.” He questioned how they would complete such a project now.
Agbenyo suggested that President John Dramani Mahama engage private investors. He believes they could convert the incomplete structure into residential apartments for essential workers.
He said, “Let us get some investors and convert that whole place.” He mentioned that staff from Ridge Hospital and ministry workers could live there.
Agbenyo’s remarks add to ongoing discussions about the future of this controversial project. The cathedral has faced scrutiny over its cost and transparency since its launch. Calls for an audit or alternative uses have increased as governments struggle with its partly constructed state.
