A total of 155 candidates from Ghana’s 16 regions have filed nominations for today’s Council of State elections, February 11.
This election will select regional representatives to advise President John Mahama on key national issues. According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the candidates comprise 145 men and 10 women, reflecting a significant gender gap.
The nominees met eligibility criteria, including Ghanaian citizenship and good standing in society.
Unlike general elections, this process follows an Electoral College system, where district representatives cast votes.
Each of Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies nominates two electors to determine the final Council members.
Established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State provides expert advice on governance, national security, and economic development.
