Court of Appeal grants injunction order in SALL Case against John Peter Amewu and Speaker of Parliament

The Court of Appeal in Koforidua has granted an injunction. This injunction was requested by Professor Margaret Kweku and others from the SALL traditional areas. It restrains John Peter Amewu, former MP for Hohoe, from claiming his title.

The court also stopped the Speaker of Parliament from processing any payments to Mr. Amewu. This will remain in effect until the appeal is heard and decided.

On July 29, 2024, the Ho High Court dismissed an election petition against Mr. Amewu. Justice Owoahene Acheampong ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction over the case. A Notice of Appeal was filed on July 31, 2024, challenging this decision.

The application for the injunction was submitted on December 23, 2024, at the Court of Appeal. Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata represented the petitioners during this hearing. He argued that justice required preventing any payments to Mr. Amewu until after the appeal.

Counsel for Mr. Amewu claimed he did nothing wrong. He suggested that any misleading information came from the Electoral Commission instead.

The three-member panel included Justice Bright Mensah, Justice Noble Nkrumah, and Justice Hasata Amaleboba (Mrs.). They found that the application for an injunction was valid and justified.
