‘Daughter of a murderer’ comment: Majority pushes for NPP backbenchers to face Privileges Committee

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga is calling for action against NPP backbenchers. This follows their silence on an offensive remark made in Parliament earlier this year.

On May 27, Mr. Ayariga spoke in the House after Parliament resumed. He urged that all NPP backbenchers present during the incident be referred to the Privileges Committee. He described their behavior as a "breach of privilege."

He noted that the Speaker had given a one-week ultimatum for someone to take responsibility. However, no one has come forward, and he insists the majority caucus will not let it go unresolved.

"The majority caucus demands that all NPP backbench members present should face investigation," he stated. He condemned the remark and called it a disgraceful moment in recent parliamentary history.

Background

The controversy involves a derogatory comment aimed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. She is the MP for Klottey Korle and daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The incident occurred on February 4 during discussions about Joseph Boakye Danquah's death anniversary. As Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke, an unidentified voice shouted, "Daughter of a murderer, sit down!"

This comment suggested Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings' father was involved in past political killings, which is historically debated. The outburst caused chaos in the chamber as members expressed shock and disapproval.

The Speaker issued a one-week ultimatum for the responsible MP to come forward or face consequences. So far, no one has taken responsibility for the comment.
