Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary under President Akufo-Addo, is calling for an investigation. He wants to know the source of money given to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiama by Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi is the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board.
The controversy began after footage showed Gyamfi giving an undisclosed amount of cash to Asiama. She is also known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist. This incident has caused public outrage, especially after President John Mahama launched a new Code of Conduct for Public Officials.
The context of the transaction is unclear. Critics are concerned about transparency and appropriateness regarding public officials' actions.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 12, Adjei questioned both the act and its financial backing. He stated, “What needs to be done is an investigation into the money that he was sharing.” He emphasized that it’s important to find out how much money Gyamfi shares when cameras are not present.
Adjei referenced Gyamfi's previous comments on money laundering as a standard for accountability. He recalled that Gyamfi said possessing unaccounted-for money could indicate money laundering.
Adjei insisted that Gyamfi should explain where the funds came from before any formal investigation begins. “He needs to tell us what your salary is and what land you sold,” Adjei said.
He added that there should be clarity about this generosity and called for an investigation into the source of the funds. Although Gyamfi apologized on May 11, describing his action as a personal gesture, calls for transparency continue to grow.
The Chief of Staff has summoned Sammy Gyamfi over this cash gift to Agradaa.
