Defence Minister tells NPP's 'mighty' Minority to “get serious” over military reshuffle allegations

Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has dismissed allegations from the New Patriotic Party's Minority in Parliament. They claimed the government is unjustly removing senior military officers. Dr. Boamah described these claims as out of touch and baseless.

On Thursday, he responded to the Minority's concerns on Facebook. The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, alleged that dismissals were politically motivated. They argued this threatens the professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Dr. Boamah urged the Minority to "get serious" and respect military protocols. He accused them of ignoring long-standing precedents regarding military command transitions.

"The Minority must stand up to be counted," he wrote. He stated they are either out of touch or have forgotten established practices within the Armed Forces.

He referenced a meeting held by Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General William Agyapong with Two-Star Generals. This meeting highlighted transparency and tradition behind recent leadership changes in the military.

A statement from the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed this meeting occurred on April 28, 2025, at Burma Camp. It was a "valedictory meeting" attended by all serving Two-Star Generals. During this meeting, outgoing officers were formally recognized according to military custom.

The Defence Minister emphasized that even affected generals acknowledged this process as part of established protocol. “This is not the first time such transitions have happened,” he said.

He added that professionalism and integrity in the Ghana Armed Forces should not be politicized. The Ministry of Defence has not named specific officers affected by these changes but insists they are procedural and rooted in military tradition, not political interference.
