Deputy Information Minister justifies decision not to auction 5G network

Deputy Information Minister Sylvester Tetteh has explained the government's decision not to auction the 5G network rollout contract, aiming for maximum benefit by collaborating with industry players such as Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, and Tech Mahindra.

Tetteh noted that auctioning the 4G network in 2015 resulted in only 15% penetration, mostly in city centers, leaving much of the country without coverage.

To avoid repeating this issue with 5G, the government created a special purpose vehicle involving all industry players.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Awuni Azure has called on the government to provide evidence supporting its decision.
