Do your work but respect the law – Minority to EOCO

The Minority in Parliament has warned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). They urged EOCO to follow the law amid rising tensions. This comes after the detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke in Parliament. He emphasized the need for lawful treatment during investigations. He cautioned that EOCO's current actions could set a bad precedent.

“Do your work but respect the law,” he said. Many people cooperate with investigations and are treated respectfully. “But the way we are treating ourselves—it will come back and haunt us in 2029,” he warned.

Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 27. His detention relates to alleged financial impropriety involving EXIMBANK. He has not met the GHS50 million bail condition, which requires two sureties.

Afenyo-Markin criticized the bail conditions as unrealistic and punitive. He questioned how Wontumi could meet such high requirements. “We don’t have GHS50 million worth of properties,” he stated.

He announced that the Minority would protest by leaving parliamentary proceedings. They plan to join Wontumi in solidarity during his detention. “We are all going to sleep there with him,” he added.

The Minority Leader called for cross-party support on this issue. “I pray that my colleagues will support so that with one voice, EOCO will know that Parliament was united,” he said.
