Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has strongly opposed ex-Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu’s admission that MPs receive money from the Chief of Staff after vetting nominees, calling for an immediate halt to the practice.
Speaking on Joy News, Domelevo questioned the legitimacy of such payments, arguing that Parliament has its own budget and should not rely on funds from the Chief of Staff.
“If we know that after doing this work, we will be remunerated, it influences the work that we are doing. So there is influence peddling there,” he stated. “If it is true, then I think that practice must stop.”
The revelation has sparked concerns over parliamentary integrity, with critics warning that financial incentives—regardless of when they are given—could compromise the vetting process.
While Osei-Owusu insists the payments were mere facilitation, Domelevo and others argue they pose a threat to transparency in governance.
