Domelovo urges Parliament to revamp ministerial vetting process

Daniel Domelevo, Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, Former Auditor-General

Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelovo has called on Parliament to adopt a more serious and purposeful approach to the vetting of ministerial nominees.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Programme on February 1, 2025, Domelovo expressed concerns over the lack of in-depth scrutiny during recent vetting sessions. He emphasized that the process should focus on assessing nominees' qualifications, competencies, and ethical backgrounds, rather than trivial matters.

Domelovo criticized the rush of certain vetting sessions, with some nominees given as little as eight minutes. He also pointed out the irrelevant questions, such as inquiries into martial arts, instead of professional qualifications.

He urged Parliament to adopt international best practices by allocating more time for comprehensive evaluations. Domelovo further advocated for clearer guidelines to ensure fairness and warned against negative political benchmarking.
