Former Attorney-General Martin Amidu has warned President John Mahama. He cautioned against accepting any resignation from Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. This warning comes while the process for her possible removal is still active.
Amidu shared his views in a detailed opinion piece. He dismissed claims of political interference regarding the petitions against the Chief Justice. He stated that there are unfounded rumors from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and others.
These rumors suggest that the petitions were engineered by the President and the NDC. Amidu emphasized that there is no evidence to support these claims.
He warned that accepting the Chief Justice’s resignation too soon could worsen suspicions. It would also undermine the constitutional process currently in place.
“President Mahama would confirm these rumors if he accepts any resignation,” Amidu said. He urged Mahama to let the appointed Committee finish its work first.
For Amidu, maintaining the integrity of the legal process is crucial. This holds true even if the Chief Justice eventually resigns.
“It’s better for her to resign after an acquittal,” he noted. This would prevent any appearance of selfish motives behind the petitions.
Amidu reiterated a metaphor about consequences of cutting processes short. “The snake is already wounded and may retaliate next time,” he warned.
He cautioned that truncating this process could lead to future issues for petitioners. “History does not repeat itself but it rhymes,” he concluded.
