Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has issued a strong warning. He addressed the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. He urged them not to repeat past mistakes regarding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. Ofori-Atta is currently abroad for medical treatment.
In an open letter, Amidu shared a painful historical example. He recalled how Victor Selormey, a former deputy Finance Minister, was treated poorly. Selormey was forced to return to Ghana while critically ill. Upon arrival, he was arrested at the airport and later died after receiving a presidential pardon.
Amidu stated, “Memory lane will remind Ghanaians that the late Victor Selormey was put under needless pressure.” He described witnessing Selormey’s arrest on April 15, 2001. The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), now known as the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), arrested him after he flew in from London.
Amidu blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for this act. He specifically mentioned former President John Agyekum Kufour and Attorney General Nana Akufo-Addo.
He warned that the NDC should not allow Kissi Agyebeng to repeat such behavior. “No Ghanaian citizen under suspicion should be treated this way,” he said. This is especially true for those who are seriously ill and seeking medical attention abroad.
