Dr. China rejects Kwabena Agyapong’s top-down election proposal for NPP

Dr. Charles Dwamena, known as Dr. China, is the NPP National Treasurer. He has rejected Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong's proposal for a top-down approach to presidential primaries.

Dr. China believes this proposal undermines participatory democracy within the NPP. He emphasizes that the current electoral framework reflects the party’s grassroots character.

The system includes a multi-tiered electoral college made up of various leaders. Each level is democratically elected from the one below it, ensuring legitimacy flows from the base.

He argues that changing this process would harm the party's foundation. Starting presidential selection from the top would abandon internal democratic practices.

Dr. China bases his argument on understanding the party’s legal and structural integrity. Even minor changes to the electoral college require comprehensive elections at all levels.

These elections are sequential and interdependent, culminating in selecting a flagbearer. Any new configuration must follow due process to be valid.

He also points out that even without expansion, the current electoral college's mandate is expiring. It would be unconstitutional and morally wrong for it to select a new candidate.

Renewal through elections is essential, not optional. Dr. China warns that starting from the top would create an undemocratic coronation disguised as reform.

This approach violates both the party’s constitution and its spirit of inclusion. It represents a clash between control and participatory legitimacy.

The strength of the NPP lies in its grassroots voices, especially polling station executives. Ignoring them risks dismantling what has been built over time.

Dr. China asserts that a top-down approach threatens internal trust and stability within the party's democratic foundation.

He advocates for reinforcing systems starting at polling stations where NPP's soul resides.

This statement is more than just a rebuttal; it’s a declaration against Agyapong's proposal. The top-down approach cannot serve a democratic NPP and must be firmly rejected.

Democracy fractured at its base rarely holds together at its peak.
