EOCO’s handling of Wontumi’s case has not been proper – Martin Kpebu

Private lawyer Martin Kpebu has criticized the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO). He believes they mishandled Chairman Wontumi's case.

Kpebu noted that EOCO, led by a journalist, should share information. However, details about Wontumi's arrest remain unclear. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party is still in EOCO custody.

In a Twitter post, Kpebu expressed his concerns. He stated, “By now, EOCO should have informed us why Wontumi is being charged.” He added that Raymond Archer, as a journalist, should understand the importance of transparency. Kpebu concluded that EOCO has not managed the situation well.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney General provided some clarification on Wontumi’s arrest via social media. He stated that Wontumi is under investigation for several crimes. These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

The investigation also involves asset recovery to prevent further loss of suspected criminal proceeds. Additionally, there is a second investigation linked to an international organized crime scheme. EOCO is collaborating with international law enforcement on this matter.

Although Wontumi was granted bail set at Ghc 50 million with two sureties, complications arose. An application to change his bail conditions delayed EOCO from evaluating properties offered by Bryan Acheampong for his release.
