Andy Appiah-Kubi is the legal counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is known as Chairman Wontumi and is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Appiah-Kubi says the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) acted lawfully in arresting his client.
Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday. This happened shortly after he was questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra. His arrest has drawn criticism from some within the NPP. However, Appiah-Kubi insists that EOCO was following its legal mandate.
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the EOCO investigation,” Appiah-Kubi stated during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday. He noted that both CID and EOCO have constitutional authority to investigate. Wontumi answered all questions during his interrogation and they are cooperating fully.
Chairman Wontumi remains in custody because he could not meet bail conditions. The bail was set at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties. Reports indicate that he is also unwell. Although EOCO has not released official details about the charges, sources suggest it relates to financial transactions with Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
Appiah-Kubi explained that issues under EOCO’s investigation may differ from those investigated by CID. Regarding bail, he confirmed efforts are ongoing to meet the conditions. “Several individuals have stepped forward to support the bail process,” he said. They are now waiting for necessary documents for verification.
Appiah-Kubi emphasized their willingness to cooperate with investigators further. He assured that his client is available for any additional inquiries.
