Senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker Kennedy Osei Nyarko has made a suggestion. He believes the party should choose its presidential candidate first. This could help reduce tensions within the party.
Osei represents Akim Swedru in Parliament. He supports a proposal from former NPP General Secretary Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong. Agyapong suggested changing the party’s traditional bottom-up electoral model.
Osei thinks a top-down approach would be better. Starting with the flagbearer could limit interference from lower-level aspirants. This change could streamline the entire election process.
He warned about potential tensions in upcoming elections. “If we are not careful, there will be too much tension,” he said in a social media post. He noted that influence from presidential candidates at lower levels could complicate things.
Osei pointed out that the party's constitution does not set a fixed date for presidential primaries. This gives leadership flexibility to adjust the internal electoral timeline. Traditionally, NPP starts elections at the polling station level and moves up to select a flagbearer.
