Education Minister-designate Haruna Iddrisu has announced that first-year students in public tertiary institutions will have their admission fees refunded, as part of President John Mahama’s plan to make higher education more accessible.
Speaking during his parliamentary vetting, Iddrisu revealed that the government will allocate GH¢345 million to cover these fees for students enrolled in general subject areas, excluding professional programs like medicine.
He assured that students who have already paid will not be left out.
This initiative is aligned with the NDC’s 2024 election campaign promise and forms part of broader reforms to improve access to tertiary education for economically disadvantaged students.
Iddrisu stated, “President Mahama sees this as a model to test—if successful, we will expand it.”
